Organics

Around 300,000 tonnes of waste is already composted each year within the Municipal Waste sector, but almost a million tonnes of biodegradable waste is still being sent to landfill. By 2020, this must be reduced by 50% to comply with the Landfill Allowance Trading Scheme. As a result, nearly half a million tonnes of new treatment capacity will be required.

The commercial and industrial sector produces more than 10 million tonnes of waste a year. Of this, some 885,000 tonnes is organic waste and is still primarily being landfilled. CO2Sense is supporting projects and companies to divert this to more constructive uses. This process is generating new businesses and products, whilst simultaneously reducing CO2 emissions.

CO2Sense supports projects that develop the organic waste recycling market within Yorkshire and Humber. We are particularly supporting projects that:

  • Increase the collection of organics from domestic, commercial and industrial sources
  • Increase the reprocessing of organic waste
  • Incorporate recycled organic waste into high volume and high value end products.

Food and Drink

Nationally, UK food and drink companies generate at least 10% (10 million tonnes) of the total waste produced by UK businesses [source: Environment Agency]. Food and Drink is the largest business sector in Yorkshire and Humber and consequently produces more food and drink than any other UK region. As a result, businesses in our region can benefit from considerable savings if we can reduce food waste and increase diversion from landfill.

CO2Sense has developed a Food and Drink waste programme to divert food waste from landfill and give practical advice to existing and potential businesses which manage this waste on behalf of the food sector. Current strategy is focused on collection schemes, depackaging capacity and organic processing development.

Talk to our Food and Drinks waste Project Manager today if you have a resource efficiency idea which would be suitable for development in the food and drinks sector. To find out more, contact our Food and Drink specialist.

Plastics

The commercial and industrial sector is being driven to recycle plastic through legislative measures. The producer responsibility regulations on packaging and waste electronic and electrical equipment specify increasing targets to capture plastic streams for recycling.

Regional capacity for recycling plastic is close to 150,000 tonnes per annum. However, a further 133,000 tonnes of plastic film and 94,000 tonnes of rigid plastics are landfilled from commercial and industrial sources here each year. Investment in the segregation and treatment of composite and contaminated plastics is a key focus area for CO2Sense’s current plastics activity. This will help regional reprocessors to reach plastics currently being landfilled.

We can also help with any project that will develop the plastic recycling market in Yorkshire and Humber, and we are particularly seeking projects that will:

  • Increase the collection of plastics from domestic, commercial, industrial, and agricultural sources (www.actiononplastics.org.uk)
  • Increase the treatment and reprocessing of plastic material – particularly plastics contaminated with process materials
  • Accelerate the use of recycled plastic material in high volume and high value end products, particularly closed-loop projects
  • Improve product/packaging design to minimise plastic consumption.

Our Plastics Project Manager will be pleased to discuss any resource efficiency ideas you may have which would be suitable for development in the plastics sector.

Glass

The Yorkshire and Humber region is home to the highest concentration of bottles and jars glass manufactures in the UK, accounting for 50% of UK production. The region is also home to two large flat (window) glass manufacturers which account for over 40% of UK production. To serve the industry requirement for recycled glass, the region has four large recycled glass processing sites. As relatively small amounts of glass are collected in Yorkshire and Humber, the region is a net importer of recycled glass.

To increase re-use and recycling of glass, we work with businesses across the region to increase processing, expand collection and develop new products. CO2Sense can help with any project that will develop the glass recycling market within the Yorkshire and Humber Region. We are especially seeking projects that will:

  • Increase the collection of container glass from commercial sources such as licensed premises
  • Increase the collection and recycling of glass and associated materials from glazing companies or installers
  • Support the reprocessing of glass, both relating to closed loop recycling and alternative markets such as water filtration or aggregate uses
  • Enhance the manufacture of recycled glass products
  • Develop new markets for recycled glass products.

If you have a resource efficiency idea which would be suitable for development in the glass sector, please contact our Glass Project Manager.

Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment (WEEE)

Every year in the UK, households throw away over 1 million tonnes of waste electronics such as TVs, fridges, hairdryers and computers. Regionally, over 100,000 tonnes of household and over 8,000 tonnes of business waste electronics is discarded annually, with a 5% growth forecast in the next 3 years. CO2Sense delivers support to the waste electronics sector through a number of practical measures, offering support and development for EEE businesses that collect and process waste electronics, promotion and support of the Reuse sector, and network building for the region’s waste electronics re-use and recycling sectors. All of which has the primary aim of reducing Green House Gas Emissions and diverting waste electronics from Landfill.

Our Waste Electronics Project Manager will be pleased to discuss any resource efficiency ideas you may have which would be suitable for development in the electronics or electrical sector.

Wood

The UK produces around 5-6 million tonnes of post-consumer wood waste each year. In 1996 only about 2% of wood waste was recycled, but by 2008 this had increased to 22% (around 2 million tonnes). Although this increase is positive, there is still a long way to go, and the main barrier is a lack of economic segregated collection and outlets for the lower grades or contaminated wood.

CO2Sense can help with any project that will develop the waste wood recycling market within the Yorkshire and Humber Region. We are particularly supporting projects that will:

  • Help improve segregation of wood waste
  • Improve the collection facilities for smaller wood waste producers
  • Reduce both wood waste to landfill and greenhouse gas emissions
  • Accelerate the use of recycled wood material in high volume and high value end products.

Companies can contact our Wood Project Manager if they have a resource efficiency idea which would be suitable for development.
