Renewable Heat Incentive Announced
Subsidies for renewable heating systems in England, Scotland and Wales have been announced today by Department of Energy and Climate Change.
The government will invest around £860million in generating low carbon heat, giving an incentive to use alternative fuels, particularly woodfuel, instead of cheaper but more polluting fossil fuel heating systems.
Chris Huhne, Secretary of State, said, “This incentive is the first of its kind in the world. It’ll help the UK shift away from fossil fuel, reducing carbon emissions and encouraging innovation, jobs and growth in new advanced technologies.”
In the scheme, those generating heat through woodfuel will earn payments, making investment in such systems more financially viable for businesses, and helping to reduce CO2 by 44 million tonnes by 2020, equivalent to the annual carbon emitted by 20 typical new gas power stations.
Gordon Watts, CO2Sense Woodfuel Manager, said, “We are delighted to hear the details of the long awaited RHI. It is a big step forward for the woodfuel industry, and the incentives are important in helping convert heat production from fossil fuels to low carbon alternatives, such as wood chip and pellet.”
The £860m government scheme is expected to increase green capital investment by £4.5 billion up to 2020, stimulating the market in renewable heat.
Those interested in supplying or using woodfuel can apply for funding from CO2Sense to help them convert to using woodfuel. Click here for more details.
