Spotlight on Reuse- from Bulky to Basics, Furniture to Fashion

held at

Romanby Golf & Country Club, Yafforth Road, Northallerton

The leading forum for resource efficiency professionals in the North of England, Resources North, turns the spotlight on reuse at it seminar next month, bringing together speakers from WRAP, Starter Packs Glasgow and Community Action Groups as well as delegates from across the region to focus on best practice.

Jenny Robinson from WRAP presented the national picture and introduce new guidance for local authority officers seeking to maximise the volume of bulky waste diverted from the waste stream. Helen Middleton, Development Officer for the Furniture Reuse Network, who, along with environmental consultancy Resource Futures developed the guidance, will discuss procuring bulky waste services.

CO2Sense (sponsor of the Resources North events programme) presented case studies from the region focusing on furniture reuse projects that have benefited from the support available from CO2Sense programmes to help prevent waste. Who said second hand is second best?

Sarah Findlay from Starter Packs Glasgow shared with delegates the social and environmental benefits of starter packs - household items such as crockery/cutlery, pots and pans, linen and towels, which are provided to homeless households acquiring permanent tenancies - in a thought-provoking presentation called The Bare Necessities.

Hosts York and North Yorkshire Waste Partnership brought some glamour to the proceedings with a presentation featuring footage of their fabulous fashion show, part of Yorkshire and the Humber’s Choose to Reuse campaign. And finally, community engagement specialist Simon Kenton from Oxfordshire’s Community Action Groups project illustrated innovative ways of promoting charities and swap shops to divert books, toys, WEEE and much more from the waste steam - one man’s junk is another man’s treasure! The day will close, as always, with an interactive workshop.
