THE University of Hull is gearing up to support the development of a major new wind turbine manufacturing plant in the city.
The Siemens plant is expected to create 700 jobs directly and thousands more in the supply chain and the university is planning to be at the centre of efforts to ensure the region's workforce has the necessary skills.
It will also be providing research expertise to the project both in terms of renewable energy and limiting the environmental impact on the Humber estuary. Professor Stephanie Haywood, director of the University's Centre for Adaptive Science and Sustainability, said: "This is a highly important development for the Humber region and the University is committed to supporting the initiative.
"We will ensure that the people of the region have access to the training they need for the jobs that are being created in the city. The University offers many courses including Renewable Energy, Environmental Management and Coastal Marine Biology.
The University was a partner in the Green Port Hull initiative to persuade a major wind manufacturer to choose the city as its base.
