RENEWABLE Energy Generation is to invest £12.5m in a new wind farm in the East Riding.

The firm this morning announced plans to buy five wind turbines from manufacturer Vestas for its site at Sancton Hill.

Renewable Energy said the turbines were be delivered in spring 2012 with the wind firm expected to produce around 27 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity per year.

Chief executive Andrew Whalley said: "Sancton Hill has an excellent wind resource and this project will increase REG's renewable energy output by 25% to around 133GWh per annum and increase total capacity to 51.15 megawatts.

"We are delighted to be working with Vestas again as their turbines are performing extremely well on a number of our operational sites."

East Riding Council gave planning permission for the Sancton Hill development earlier this year.
