Onshore wind energy is now "competitive with all of the conventional energy sources", the energy and climate change secretary has claimed.Speaking at a Wind Week event in Leicester Square, Chris Huhne said that there is much potential for the development of renewable wind energy in the UK.He stated that energy generation from onshore wind farms was already competitive, while that produced from offshore sources was likely to head the same way over time. The government pledged to deliver an offshore energy grid in its coalition programme to "support the development of a new generation of offshore wind power".Mr Huhne said that wind sources in the UK have the potential to produce enough energy to power 33 million homes, suggesting there may be the option to export the energy created. "Now we only have 24 million homes so this is a real prospect of us becoming a net energy exporter again as we were at the peak of North Sea oil and gas," he said.
