Spending cuts announced by the coalition government mean that the Low Carbon Buildings Programme (LCBP) is now closed for new applications.Chancellor George Osbourne announced £6 billion of departmental spending cuts for the year 2010/11, with £85 million coming from the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC).The LCBP has had £3 million cut from its budget, immediately closing the programme for new applications.Grant offers will still be honoured, as will those applications which were received before the programme was closed and are currently being considered.The DECC said that demand for grants under the Renewable Heat Incentive has been "unprecedented", and as such no further cash will be allocated to the programme, although the £63 million in funds will remain.It was also argued that the "support mechanisms" put in place from the feed-in tariff scheme mean that the LCBP is "no longer required for electrical microgeneration".Since its creation the LCBP has provided 20,000 grants for the installation of microgeneration technologies. In total, £34 million in savings will come from business support programmes, while £5 million will also be cut from the administrative costs of the DECC.
