Low carbon heat options

Almost half of all the UK's CO2 emissions arise from the use of heat. That is, energy used for space and water heating, industrial process heating and industrial drying. This means that in order to achieve large scale reductions in carbon emissions, the issue of heat usage must be addressed effectively.

At CO2Sense, we understand the problems and complexities associated with this area. Would-be adopters of low carbon heat face key barriers to a successful project completion including lack of technical know-how, lack of capital and an aversion to risk. CO2Sense offer assistance to businesses in overcoming such barriers by offering support and consultancy, technical expertise or direct funding.

If you are a business seeking to adopt low carbon heat alternatives, we can conduct an assessment of your processes and, coupled with knowledge and best practice, will advise on how to introduce the cost-saving and environmental benefits of low carbon heat to your organisation. We can then support and facilitate the adoption of heating networks, heat recovery, boiler conversions or modifications or developing an Energy Service Company (ESCO). Heating networks

Understanding the viability of a community/district heating scheme can often be a time consuming and costly exercise. What’s more, high development costs are a major obstacle to the growth of heating networks.

CO2Sense can offer an indicative service that represents the first step towards producing the right solution. Involving guidance, consultation and support, we can help companies focus on improving heat usage and reducing carbon emissions. Contact us to find out how we could help your organisation.

Heat recovery

CO2Sense can help your business by providing advice and support on heat recovery from industrial processes and reusing waste heat to make your business more efficient.

Financing boiler conversions

Finance, information and experience can be prohibitive factors for businesses exploring the option of converting existing coal fired boilers to using wood pellet, the low carbon alternative.

From our experience, converting boilers is a relatively simple process which has already been successfully trialled in the region. Some manufacturers offer conversion kits for coal fired boilers, and there are pellet burners available that can be retrofitted to oil fired boilers.

In order to help businesses overcome these barriers, CO2Sense provides funding to minimise the cost to your business of converting your existing coal fired boilers to burning wood pellet. This funding covers 50% of the cost of the conversion and is available for both private and public sector organisations throughout Yorkshire & Humber. Additionally, we offer expert information and assistance to support conversions. Please note that currently we can only help with the conversion of coal and oil boilers, but we are happy to receive applications for the conversion of boilers using other types of fuel.

Installing an industrial boiler

Using an industrial biomass boiler can deliver huge business benefits in terms of emissions and cost savings. However, both the high upfront costs and the risks involved pose a barrier to the adoption of this low carbon heat option.

CO2Sense can help you to overcome this barrier by leasing your company an industrial wood pellet boiler. This means that without the risk of capital outlay, your business can experience the benefits of biomass energy in delivering low carbon heat.

Please get in touch if you have a significant heat load (around 2MW), primarily for an industrial process e.g. steam, and you are interested in making use of a demonstration boiler. Contact us today.

Understanding the incentives for low carbon heat

Finally, CO2Sense can help you understand the incentives for generating low carbon heat. For example, it’s a straightforward way to meet many of your obligations under the Carbon Reduction Commitment and the EU Emissions Trading Scheme. We can also help you to access incentives including the Renewable Heat Incentive, CHPQA and additional ROCs for CHP. As well as financial support, you can also look forward to expert assistance with everything from technical issues and fuel source supply to getting help with accreditation. Better still, switching to low carbon heat can also help improve your company’s profitability.

Help to find a local source of biomass

We can help businesses find reliable biomass suppliers in the Yorkshire and Humber region by drawing upon our contacts and network of suppliers. We can assist in sourcing general biomass, but more specifically we have a tool specially designed to source wood.
