Case studyBioflame is a small business located in North Yorkshire, whose focus is the use of waste wood and other waste fuels for the generation of heat and power.

CO2Sense have supported a project to demonstrate Bioflame’s Waste Incineration Directive (WID) compliant plant with a view to rolling out the technology through joint ventures with waste producers and operators.

CO2Sense has been established to secure the economic opportunities arising from new and renewable energy technologies and projects across the Yorkshire and Humber region and to deliver greenhouse gas emissions reductions to meet regional targets.

CO2Sense establishes commercial partnerships with private and public sector organisations to fill knowledge gaps, bridge market failures and bring to fruition energy projects that will deliver significant greenhouse gas savings and economic benefits to the region.

Technical summary of project (capacity, fuel, output)

The pilot project, based in Pickering, North Yorkshire, produces 500kW electrical output from waste wood using advanced burner and WID technology. The plant is fully compliant with the WID, and includes continuous monitoring of emissions.

CO2Sense's role in the project

CO2Sense have assisted Bioflame with technical input to the project, including development of the grid connection arrangements and negotiations with the distribution network operator. CO2Sense have also provided support for ROC accreditation and fuel sampling and analysis. Financial support was provided in the form of a £200k loan and 50% of the grid connection cost with part repayment based on future sales of Bioflame’s technology.

Achievements / projected benefit

The site began full operation in December 2007 and is now claiming ROCs for the electricity it produces. The project delivers carbon savings of approximately 1,700Te per annum, excluding land fill diversion benefits.
